HPMC as Thickening Agent

Synonyms: HPMC, methylhydroxyprop(ox)yl cellulose, MHPC, 2-hydroxy- propyl ether of methylcellulose, hypromellose 

The hydroxypropylmethylcelluloses basically have the same character as the pure methylcelluloses. 

Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) is a water-soluble, high-purity, non-ionic cellulose ether. Methocel products function as thickener, binder and rheology modifier. The combination of properties present simultaneously brings economic advantages versus other polymers.

Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose having a medium to high the degree of substitution/ DS (1.52.0) is very soluble in cold water (030 °C (3286 °F)). The solubility of HPMCs is improved compared with that of pure methylcelluloses.   Transparent colloidal solutions of low to high viscosity are formed, depending on the degree of polymerization and the substance concentration. 

Like powdered methylcellulose, HPMC also tends to form lumps when trans- ferred to cold water because of its high speed of hydration. Clear solubility and transparency can be increased by short- term cooling to 05 °C (3241 °F).

Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (DS 1.52.0) is insoluble in: 

  • hot water at temperatures above about 55 °C (131 °F);
  • ethanol (100%) but soluble in mixtures of EtOH with water (up to 90 : 10); 
  • fats, oils.
