Diethylenetriamine (abbreviated DETA and also known as 2,2’-Iminodi(ethylamine)[2]) is an organic compound with the formula HN(CH2CH2NH2)2. This colourless hygroscopic liquid is soluble in water and polar organic solvents, but not simple hydrocarbons. Diethylenetriamine is structural analogue of diethylene glycol. Its chemical properties resemble those for ethylene diamine, and it has similar uses. It is a weak base and its aqueous solution is alkaline.  DETA is a by product of the production of ethylenediamine from ethylene dichloride.

Diethylenetriamine is a yellow liquid with an ammonia-like odor. Less dense than water. Corrosive to metals and tissue. Vapors heavier than air. Burns, although possibly difficult to igntie. Toxic oxides of nitrogen produced during combustion. Used as a solvent for plastics and dyes and in chemical synthesis. Boiling Point 207 DEG C @ 760 MM HG, Melting Point -39 DEG C, Flash Point 101.7 deg C (Open cup), water solubility 1000 mg/mL.

Diethylenetriamine (DETA) is used mainly as a building block for wet strength agents in the paper industry, in the chelating agent synthesis, and for detergents. In other applications DETA is used as an intermediate in corrosion inhibitors, polyamide resins, asphalt additives and epoxy hardener systems.

Diethylenetriamine is a common curing agent for Epoxy-resins in epoxy adhesives. In coordination chemistry, it serves as a tridentate ligand forming complexes such as Co(dien)(NO2)3.

Like some related amines, it is used in oil industry for the extraction of acid gas.

DETA or Diethylenetriamine as an economical aliphatic polyamine hardener that provides a short pot life and cures in minutes with standard unmodified liquid epoxy resins.

DETA as epoxy curing agent is used for civil engineering applications, maintenance paints, and in the manufacture of epoxy-amine adducts. It is also used in adhesives, epoxy composite applications and as an accelerator for polyamide curing agents. In electrical applications, DETA is used for casting, potting and encapsulation.

Note: this amine curing agent is hygroscopic and may pick up mouisture and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

What are the functions and applications of Diethylenetriamine (DETA)?
-  For wet strength mainly for paper applications Diethylenetriamine (DETA) is converted with a dicarboxylic           acid (for example Adipic  Acid) into a polyaminoamide. The polyaminoamide is subsequently cross-linked
   with Epichlorohydrin.
- Within the chemistry of metal komplexes Diethylenetriamine (DETA) is an import chelate.   Diethylenetriamine      (DETA) is converted with bromine acetic acid to DTPA (Diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid).
- Furthermore Diethylenetriamine is used as hardener for epoxy resins. It can react with Epoxy Resins,
  accelerated by phenols, acids and certain alcohols in such a way that a three-dimensional, cross-linked,
  infusible structure is formed.
- In several additional applications Diethylenetriamine is used as building block for synthesis.

This product is suitable for use in applications such as:
* Adhesives
* Casting and Tooling
* Civil Engineerinmg
* Composites
* Marine and Protective Coatings
* Potting and Encapsulation

DETA characterictis are:
>Low viscosity
>Economical
>Fast reacting curing agents
>Imparting high chemical, >and solvent resistance
>Improved physical properties

When cured under ambient conditions DETA coatings reach maximum physical properties in about four days, and max chemical resistance in seven days.

DETA can be modified to form a variety of other curatives, including polyamides, polyamine-adducts, amidoamine, ketimines and mannich bases.

Notes:
Resin solution: blend the resin solution with the solvents and the flow control agents, filter if desired, and package.

Curing agent solution: blend the curing agent with the solvents with thorough agitation and package in exacting quantities.

Slowly and thorougly blend the curing agent solution into the resin solution. For max results, age the blended components 45 minutes to one hour and apply in a well ventilated area. The blend has a limited pot life but should be usable up to 8 to 10 hours with very little viscocity change under normal working conditions.
