JEFFAMINE APPLICATION

FLOORING, TROWELING and MORTARS

An important application are for Jeffamine D 230 is their use in highly filled epoxy formulations for industrial or decorative floor coatings. There are two primary types of epoxy flooring systems: Self leveling and trowel coverings. Epoxy flooring can be as simple as a thin film clear or lightly pigmented formulation or a series of build up coating layers. However, most epoxy floors today consist of several coats, which usually include at least a base coat, mid coat and glaze or topcoat.

Self leveling flooring have lower filler contents ( less than 4:1 filler to epoxy binder ), permitting the material to be spread over the substrate, usually concrete, to a thickeness of about 1/8 inch. Such binder rich flooring are more chemically resistant. Skid or slip resistance may be improved by broadcasting sand or other mineral fillers over the top of the floor prior fo final curing.

Trowable floorings generally are more highly filled ( 6-8:1 filler to binder ratios ) with a coarse mineral filler, such as quartz and / or silica sand. These higher filler loadings lead to outstanding abrasion resistance, coupled with excellent mechanical strength. Such systems are usually screeded or troweled over the substrate to a thickness of 1/4 inch or less.

A special type of synthetic epoxy surface is the pebble finished system, where decorative river rock is used as the filler at levels of 10-15:1 over the epoxy binder. In these applications the clear epoxy is also a high gloss coating or decorative glaze for the aggregate material. These systems are sometimes known as decorative aggregate and have been popular for interior and exterior applications in flooring, walkways and swimming pool decks.

The performance of an epoxy based floor system depends on proper selection and formulation of components, as well as adequate substrate surface preparation. The Jeffamine products, along with monononylphenol ( MNP ) have found application in all of the above flooring systems. These are often used in combination with polyamides or cycloaliphatic amine hardeners to achieve desired performance characteristics, which include appearance, chemical resistance, impact resistance and abrasion resistance.

Heavily filled epoxy systems may be used for structural  applications, such as concrete reinforcement. Often referred to as polymer concrete, these materials are used in applications, such as bridge overlays and other areas requiring higher compressive strengths than offered by conventional porland cement concrete. Similar formulations are also used for tile grouting or mortars and concrete repair.

Repair of cracked concrete structures may be accomplished by injection of clear epoxy systems into the areas around the developing crack. This is done by injecting a low viscosity, slow curing epoxy formulation using a syringe delivery into many, finely drilled cavities in the vicinity of the crack. The Jeffamine, such as D 230, D 400, T 403 are ideal for such systems, which have the ability to saturate deep into the concrete matrix before the  epoxy matrix begins to gel and finally set or cure. This practice of crack injection has been used in the repair of concrete building, bridges, railroad ties, and dams.

All of the above described applications fall into the broad category of construction, or civil engineering. Aside from surface coatings and adhesives, materials included would be the " synthetic " concretes, mortars, grouts, and putties. Such materials certainly find extensive use in new construction and various civil engineering applications; and for patching and repair, they have no peer. Several specific examples follow.

Diethylenetriamine (abbreviated DETA and also known as 2,2’-Iminodi(ethylamine)[2]) is an organic compound with the formula HN(CH2CH2NH2)2. This colourless hygroscopic liquid is soluble in water and polar organic solvents, but not simple hydrocarbons. Diethylenetriamine is structural analogue of diethylene glycol. Its chemical properties resemble those for ethylene diamine, and it has similar uses. It is a weak base and its aqueous solution is alkaline.  DETA is a by product of the production of ethylenediamine from ethylene dichloride.

Diethylenetriamine is a yellow liquid with an ammonia-like odor. Less dense than water. Corrosive to metals and tissue. Vapors heavier than air. Burns, although possibly difficult to igntie. Toxic oxides of nitrogen produced during combustion. Used as a solvent for plastics and dyes and in chemical synthesis. Boiling Point 207 DEG C @ 760 MM HG, Melting Point -39 DEG C, Flash Point 101.7 deg C (Open cup), water solubility 1000 mg/mL.

EPOXY VS PU FLOORING

Epoxy and polyurethane are great for : 
> Protecting your floor against stains, damage, chemicals, oils, and wear.  
> They are both light reflective, easy to clean, and long lasting.  

EPOXY FLOOR COATING BENEFITS
Epoxy is a thermosetting polymer which is available in three different formulations for : a garage floor coating and sealer : 
1. water based, 
2. solvent based, and 
3. 100% solids.  

These formulations allow for varying degrees of thickness from 3 mils to over 10 mils for a single coating for a garage floor.  They also allow for ease of application, special bonding characteristics, and VOC considerations.  Epoxy bonds extremely well to properly prepared concrete and can sometimes be used as a resurfacing agent for old or worn concrete that needs a new garage floor surface.

  • 100% solids and 
  • provide for an extremely hard, thick, and impact resistant surface
  • This self-leveling thickness contributes to filling in the small hairline cracks and imperfections of the floor as well as providing protection.  
  • It also works well against hot tire pick up, scratching, and wear from abrasion.  
Though some epoxy formulas come with U.V. inhibitors, they will still eventually yellow or amber as the industry calls it when exposed to sunlight for any length of time.  This is something to consider when choosing a garage floor finish.

POLYURETHANE FLOOR COATING BENEFITS

Like epoxy, polyurethane is a thermosetting polymer as well and is considered a high performance coating.  It is commonly known as urethane for short, though that it is technically incorrect and there is actually a big difference between polyurethane and urethane.  If someone is advertising a urethane coating, it is actually polyurethane.

aliphatic polyurethane is the desired choice for garage floors.  Though they are approximately 60% to 70% solids depending on the manufacturer, a polyurethane coating is only about 2 to 3 mils in thickness and can’t be adjusted as with epoxy.

Aliphatic polyurethane/advantage of polyurethane over epoxy  :
  • More flexibility than epoxy and it is this flexibility that aids in absorbing impacts better.  
  • Much more abrasion resistant.  ( the wear resistance of polyurethane over epoxy is almost 3 to 1 )
  • The resistance to chemicals is better than epoxy as well and this includes resistance to solvents such as methylene chloride which is the primary ingredient in paint stripper.
  • U.V. stable ( it won’t yellow like epoxy does when exposed to small amounts of sunlight over a period of time ).  
 can tolerate larger temperature swings, and handles humidity much better.  It is also available in different finishes from satin to very glossy.

Less Advantages 
  • The surface of polyurethane is not as hard as epoxy but it is much more scratch resistant,
  • It does not bond well to concrete and its thin dry film thickness will not work well as a self-leveling coating to fill in small cracks and divots in the surface.  
  • Another consideration is that most polyurethanes are solvent based, meaning they can have high VOC’s,and may require a respirator to apply.
  • Polyurethane is also a better medium than epoxy to mix in anti-slip aggregate

ALKYL GLYCIDYL ETHER SEBAGAI EPOXY REACTIVE DILUENT

Reactive diluent adalah suatu bahan kimia yang digunakan untuk mengurangi viskositas (kekentalan) suatu resin atau polimer, sehingga lebih mudah untuk diaplikasikan atau diproses. 

Namun, yang membedakan reactive diluent dari diluent biasa adalah bahwa reactive diluent dapat bereaksi dengan resin atau polimer lainnya dalam proses curing atau polimerisasi.


Fungsi Reactive Diluent:

Contoh Reactive Diluent:

  • Epoxy diluent:
    Digunakan dalam sistem epoxy untuk mengurangi viskositas dan meningkatkan kemampuan proses.

  • Acrylic diluent:
    Digunakan dalam sistem acrylic untuk mengurangi viskositas dan meningkatkan kemampuan proses.

JEFFAMINE D 230 as specialthy epoxy curing agent

Jeffamine D-230 polyoxypropylenediamine undergoes reactions typical of primary amines. Jeffamine D-230 polyetheramine is a difunctional, primary amine with an average molecular weight of about 230. The primary amine groups are located on secondary carbon atoms at the end of the aliphatic polyether chain.

Because of its unique structure, however, Jeffamine D-230 has found its most significant use as an epoxy curing agent. The use of Jeffamine D-230 leads to tough, clear, impact-resistant coatings, castings, and adhesives.
Example include coatings for decoupage and furniture, reinforced composites, electrical encapsulation, and lamination. Coatings made with unmodified Jeffamine D-230 are free of the surface “ blush “ prevalent with many amine curing agents. Jeffamine D-230 has found its way into miniature medical devices, industrial floors, boat construction, decorator clocks, and space vehicles.

Epoxies formulated with Jeffamine D-230 can be readily modified because Jeffamine D-230 is compatible with a wide range of modifiers and curing agents, including other Jeffamine products. Amidation of Jeffamine D-230 with a variety of aliphatic and aromatic carboxylic acids is readily accomplished by known techniques. The resulting poly-amides are of interest as “ hot melt “ adhesives, for example.

As a primary amine, Jeffamine D-230 reacts quickly with isocyanates. The reaction can be managed however, if small quantities are used ( e.g. as a viscosity modifier ) or if quick-mix equipment ( e.g, RIM ) is employed.

Salts may be formed readily which have potential use, e.g, as surfactants and fire retardants. The reactivity of Jeffamine D-230 may be modified by cyanoethylation, a reaction which proceeds readily and cleanly. Polyurea coatings have been made from the cyanoethylated derivative.

Steel will rust only if water and oxygen are both present and the rusting process is greatly accelerated by pollutants in the atmosphere, such as sulphur dioxide from the burning of oil, coal, or gas and chlorides from de-icing salts or marine atmospheres. Solid pollutants can be hygroscopic and may promote localised attack (e.g. corrosion pitting) at specific points on exposed steel. Protective systems must be resistant to attack by such pollutants and should be applied only to surfaces from which they have been removed.

To ensure good coating adhesion, it is essential that the surface to be coated is rendered free of dirt, dust and debris that might affect performance. Water-soluble residues, if left on the surface, will cause rapid deterioration at the interface with paint when the coating is exposed to moisture.

Paint is the most commonly used material to protect steel, and in practice the term, ‘paint’ covers a wide range of materials with different properties. The application of paint is comparatively easy with no limitation on the size of steelwork that can be treated.

For structural steelwork the paint film thickness is important for lasting protection since it is difficult to obtain perfect application under construction conditions. Best results are obtained when coatings are applied in heated enclosed workshops; units for bridge structures and building framework can be coated in this manner before erection and additional coats may be applied on site, where required.

EPOXY PRIMERS
Epoxy primers are two-pack materials utilising epoxy resins and usually have either polyamide or polyamine curing agents. They are pigmented with a variety of inhibitive and non-inhibitive pigments. Zinc phosphate epoxy primers are the most frequently encountered and give the best durability within the group.

Epoxy coatings are generally packaged in two parts that are mixed prior to application. The two parts consist of 1) an epoxy resin which is cross-linked with 2) a co-reactant or hardener. Epoxy coatings are formulated based upon the performance requirements for the end product. When properly catalyzed and applied, epoxies produce a hard, chemical and solvent resistant finish. They are typically used on concrete and steel to give resistance to water, alkali and acids.

EPOXY FLOORING VS PU FLOORING

Epoxy floors are harder, more durable and have a much higher compression strength than polyurethanes. This is why they are the preferred choice for heavy duty industries, warehouses and logistics centers with heavy forklift traffic. 

Polyurethane floors are usually softer and more elastic, which makes them more resistant to scratching as their elasticity tends to absorb some of the impact. The elasticity of PU floors also makes them a preferred choice in freezing chambers where the storage temperature can reach -30 degrees Celsius (-22 F). They are also a good choice for multideck car-parks since the elastic coating can act as a waterproofing and crack-bridging layer.

Epoxies and polyurethanes behave differently when exposed to certain chemicals. For example polyurethanes are the preferred choice in food industries that have exposure to lactic acids. This the reason why many food processing companies that work in milk, dairy, cheese production choose polyurethanes. 

Epoxies under such conditions may experience corrosion and yellowing. However when working in industries with sulfuric acids (like battery manufacturing etc) epoxy floors are much more resistant than polyurethanes. If you are working in a facility with heavy exposure to chemicals, check with the manufacturer to see which product is better suited.

Epoxy resins are also sensitive to moisture, but the damage done by humidity will be far more limited. Therefore when working in environments where the presence of humidity could be an issue, epoxy is always the much better choice.

Polyurethane floors can be easily modified to extend or limit their pot life, re-coat time as well as the total curing time. This flexibility enables contractors to complete PU floors in a much shorter space of time .With PU you could effectively start a multicoat project on Friday and hand it over on Monday. Epoxy floors are much less flexible in this respect in the sense that they usually require 7 days to fully cure.

In general polyurethanes are harder to work with. Their limited pot life and sensitivity to humidity require very well trained and experienced staff. Personally I refuse to supply inexperienced teams with PU floor resins. Too many things can go wrong.

Finally if you are wondering which one of the two resins is cheaper, I do not really have an answer to that. There are quite a few varieties of products out there. Comparing epoxies to PUs is like comparing apples to oranges. Ultimately your choice of floor should not be based on which one of the two is cheaper, but which one of the two suits your needs.

EPOTEC TH 7302 sebagai epoxy hardener

Epotec TH 7302 is a low viscosity, low colour modified cycloaliphatic polyamine curing agent for use with liquid epoxy resins such as epotec YD 128 to produce solvent free room temperature curable thermoset coatings, floor toppings. When formulated appropriately with epoxy resin it gives clear, air free, glossy surfaces. It also provides resistance to variety of chemicals such as acids, alkalies, hydrocarbons and water. Epotec TH 7301, being cycloaliphatic, also provides excellent weather resistance. It is less irritating, gives low odour, excellent transparency and light colour.

Epotec TH 7302 adalah epoxy hardener jenis poliamina sikloalifatik/cylcoaliphatic dengan viskositas rendah, warna bening yang dimodifikasi untuk digunakan dengan resin epoksi cair seperti epotec YD 128 untuk menghasilkan lapisan termoset yang dapat kering pada suhu kamar bebas pelarut, topping lantai. 

Ketika diformulasikan dengan tepat dengan resin epoksi, permukaannya menjadi bening, bebas udara, dan mengkilap. Ini juga memberikan ketahanan terhadap berbagai bahan kimia seperti asam, alkali, hidrokarbon dan air. Epotec TH 7301, bersifat sikloalifatik, juga memberikan ketahanan cuaca yang sangat baik. Benzyl alcohol adalah senyawa organik yang memiliki berbagai aplikasi industri, termasuk dalam formulasi cat epoxy.

DIETHYLENETRIAMINE as epoxy hardener for clear two part epoxy flooring and wood epoxy resin

Diethylenetriamine (DETA) is used mainly as a building block for wet strength agents 

in the paper industry, in the chelating agent synthesis, and for detergents. In other 

applications DETA is used as an intermediate in corrosion inhibitors, polyamide 

resins, asphalt additives and epoxy hardener systems.

Diethylenetriamine (DETA) as member from the class of  Ethyleneamines is used in a

broad array of applications.Diethylenetriamine is mainly used as building block for wet 

strength resins, in the synthesis for chelating agents, industrial surfactants and fabric

softeners. Additional applications of Diethylenetriamine are in asphalt-additives, 

epoxy-systems, lube oil/fuel additives, polyamide resins and mineral processing aids.

What are the functions and applications of Diethylenetriamine (DETA)?
  • For wet strength mainly for paper applications Diethylenetriamine (DETA) is converted with a dicarboxylic acid (for example Adipic Acid) into a polyaminoamide. The polyaminoamide is subsequently cross-linked with Epichlorohydrin.
  •  Within the chemistry of metal komplexes Diethylenetriamine (DETA) is an import chelate. Diethylenetriamine (DETA) is converted with bromine acetic acid to DTPA (Diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid).
  • Furthermore Diethylenetriamine is used as hardener for epoxy resins. It can react with Epoxy Resins, accelerated by phenols, acids and certain alcohols in such a way that a three-dimensional, cross-linked, infusible structure is formed.
  • In several additional applications Diethylenetriamine is used as building block for synthesis.
